Home // Blog Home // Summer....A perfect time to SHED

Now, I’m sure you’ve been meaning to create order in your home for a while. Maybe it was one of your New Years’ Resolutions that you didn’t quite keep. Then, you figured, in honor of Spring Cleaning, you’d conquer the piles…but you never quite got it together then either.  Don’t worry—when it comes to decluttering, everyone procrastinates, and summer is another fresh-start opportunity.

You know what's great about summer?  Time. The days are easier, the kids don't have homework, and the sun stays out till 9:00pm. Time slows down. We're more relaxed, have more energy and more time to spare.

This summer think about using the extra time on your hands to finally declutter -- to rid yourself of all the stuff weighing you down, getting in your way, and stealing your energy rather than fueling you when you try to relax at home. ...........

I find it just the opposite. I like to be out more in the summer since the sun is up until 9. More time playing tennis = less time cleaning my desk.

I've been "planning" to declutter for months--ok, years. I got your book Organizing...Inside Out a few years ago and just found it again--amid one of my cluttered bookshelves! I'm reading it and feeling motivated, but so overwhelmed at where to start that I still find other things to do. Our house has always been rather "no company allowed"-ish. Cleaning has always meant moving homeless junk from one room to another and dusting around it all. I did manage to have my first garage sale and moved a lot of junk from our basement, but it didn't even make a dent. The chronic chaos has been an energy sapper. But we just got a new puppy (to add to 2 dogs, 2 cats 2 kids and a husband) and now I'm motivated. When she's housebroken and allowed beyond our kitchen, I don't want to follow her all day removing toys from her mouth. Every room is cluttered and I'm ready to do some SHEDding! I just gotta make my plan and do it. But planning is a comfy place to stay.... So is this computer! OK, here I go! Thank you so much!

Summer is a great time for me to declutter. I have a huge yard sale every July, so June is spent doing major clutter busting. I have appreciated the spring cleaning challenge and the "55 things you really don't need" challenge. They have really helped me look beyond the norm. Thx

I do have to agree. I might be trying to do so much, but my days do feel a little bit longer. At least long enough to enjoy my mornings. =) -Tracy I.

It is mid-winter here and I have had the encouragement (thanks to finding your website) to get back to clearing some clutter and have organised my wardrobe during a much needed few days break from work. I read your books regularly - but the website with videos was a great motivator. Thanks - Sharon, South Australia

Summer usually is a GREAT time for me. In fact, my calendar years for Franklin Covey planning systems start in July. As clergy, my busiest time is during high liturgical seasons (end of Nov thru end of May). Summer is the time to plan (though I don't have much more rest). I am looking forward to a summer of faithfilled dreaming and organization thanks to Julie Morgenstern.

A group of us met for 6 sessions at our church to discuss and implement SHED your clutter and change your life. We loved the book, did a lot of work in our respective homes, had lots of laughs as we reported our successes and failures, and supported each other in our continued efforts. We are considering meeting now and as a support group. I am thinking as busy as all our participants are, that we might blog instead. Has anyone had any experience trying this?

It seems to me like all seasons are just too busy, but maybe that's just an excuse. I recently borrowed "SHED your stuff, change your life" on CD from the library, and listened to it while on a road trip. I loved it! One of my two jobs is inventorying losses due to fire (I work for a public insurance adjuster). Some of the SHED advice has come in handy when helping clients cope with their losses -- they've been forced to shed stuff because it all burned up or was severly damaged. By advising them that they can control their response to their disaster, that they can choose a theme for their life and new home from now on, will hopefully ease the pain of their loss, give them a sense of control again, and help keep them from over-cluttering again. Now, if I can only get my kitchen table cleared off.... :)

It's not summer anymore, but I just found out about SHED and it is changing my life. I am part way through the book and already working on the house according to my goals of being calm, competent, and connected. Thank you so much Julie for really giving me some direction and inspiration!
